Torrance Memorial Medical Center Explores End-of-Life Care and the Importance of Being Prepared

To address the importance of planning ahead and talking with family members about end-of-life decisions, Torrance Memorial Medical Center and Caring House will host a free screening of the PBS “Frontline” documentary “Being Mortal” on June 27, 2017 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The film investigates the practice of caring for the dying and explores the relationships between patients and their doctors. Following the screening, a panel of end-of-life care experts and Celia Rothman, as a representative community member, will explore the movie’s themes and encourage further discussion with audience members.

“Being Mortal” dives into the hopes of patients and families facing terminal illness. It follows surgeon Atul Gawande, M.D., M.P.H., as he shares stories of the people and families he encounters. When Gawande’s own father gets cancer, his search for answers about how best to care for the dying becomes a personal quest. The film also sheds light on how a medical system, focused on a cure, often leaves out the sensitive conversations that need to happen so a patient’s true wishes can be known and honored at the end.

The screening is free to attend and will take place at the Torrance Memorial Richard B. Hoffman Health Conference Center. Additional speakers include Edward W. Long, JD, co-founder of Caring House, the first non-medical home in Los Angeles County totally focused on end-of-life care, Mary Hersh, PhD, RN, nurse manager, Inpatient Palliative Care Program, Torrance Memorial Medical Center, and Thyra Endicott, M.D., medical director, Radiation Oncology/chair of the Bioethics Committee, Torrance Memorial Medical Center.

The event is being underwritten by The John and Wauna Harman Foundation in partnership with the Hospice Foundation of America. Seating is limited and RSVP is recommended for the event. Please call 310-517-4711 or visit www.TorranceMemorial.com/BeingMortal for more information.
