Timely Theme of Women’s Empowerment: “Mulan, Jr.”

Staged at Palos Verdes Intermediate School

At a time of increasing awareness of women’s empowerment, Palos Verdes Intermediate School is staging a production of “Mulan, Jr.”, a story of a strong female character who disguises herself as a boy in order to take her father’s place in the army. The performance runs Feb. 22 to March 3 in the school’s multipurpose room, 2161 Vía Olivera, Palos Verdes Estates.

In this version of the classic Disney cartoon, the Huns have invaded, and it is up to the misfit Mulan and her mischievous dragon sidekick, Mushu, to save the Emperor. Defying the village matchmaker, Mulan takes up arms and as the great battle with the Huns approaches, Mulan must choose between revealing her true identity as a girl, or saving all of China with her clever plan.

“The story of Mulan resonates in our current climate. Empowering young women is a worthy cause, in or out of the classroom. Hopefully, our production will reinforce the reality that girls and boys, and women and men are equal, and deserve to be treated as such,” said Mulan Jr. producer and PVIS teacher Chauntelle O’Loughlin.

The lead actors in the play are Eden Paddock and Ivan Zhivaga who both rose up the ranks as ensemble members in previous productions in 6th and 7th grade before earning the leads in their 8th grade years. “It’s a testament to hard work and patience,” said O’Loughlin.

The cast and crew of Mulan Jr. includes: Chloe Blue, Camila Jongsma, Samantha Rosenfeld, Madison Wendel, Tommy Kraak, Caroline Berry, Taylor Cowling, Eden Paddock, Neela David, Madison Zollars, Tate Hajek, Cameron Orr, Ivan Zhivaga, Jett Palmer, Ben Leet, Tommy Lee, Delaney Bradley, Evalynn Castro, Tina Cui, Karin Hirano, David Ko, Gavin Kresser, Kenzi McLay, Tali McLay, Lola Regan, Neha Sambangi, Amrutha Srivatsav, Sabrina Swartz, Kaitlyn Tarakji, Dash Tyler, Zen Vibhakar, Julian Wain, Kiley Wynn, Sarah Cartmill, Casey Cleveland, Braden Colli, Daniel Diercks, Glorien Gough, Presley Helton, Campbell Howard, Yewon Kim, Alex Lee, Timmy Lee, Katie Mandala, Skylar Rapoport, Zoe Shafiezadeh, Floyd Stott, Courtney Sugano, Evan Teshima, Tara Timm, Morgan Tomaro, and Harry Zhao.

The directors and producers of the performance are strong females themselves: O’Loughlin, director Sharon Palmer, vocal director Susan Secrist, and choreographer Laura Whitesides.

Tickets are $15 for adults, and $10 for students, seniors, and military.

Show dates are

Feb. 22, 23, 24, and March 2, 3 at 7 pm. Matinees will be Feb. 24 and March 3 at 2 pm.
