Harriet Tubman, Rose Parks, and Martin Luther King and other heroes inspire kids and adults at the Living History Museum of African American Heroes! The Living History Museum is an annual event at the library, taking place each February in partnership with PV Links, Delta Sigma Theta, the Black Heritage Association and Jack and Jill of America.

Participation in the museum is open to any kids of any ethnic background from grades K – 8th grade. In the past 7 years, over 200 children have participated in the museum, harnessing their creativity, intellectual curiosity, and commitment to teach their community about what their heroes did for our country and our world. Over the years, children have selected such heroes as Mae Jemison, George Washington Carver, Katherine Johnson, John Lewis, Jackie Robinson, Dorothy Vaughn, Lonnie Johnson, Ruby Bridges, Dr. Dre, and Aja Brown, to name just a few. Selecting a hero is the first step in an exciting process: participants often spend hours on research, planning and rehearsing.

They also create presentation boards to highlight the exciting facts and information they have learned. Finally, they take on the persona of their hero so that at the museum, they are teaching what they have learned by portraying their hero. When the museum opens, the atmosphere is full of energy. The heroes are dressed in costumes, some have props and handouts, some may even play a musical instrument. People of all ages and ethnic backgrounds have fun as they browse, meet the heroes, and come away with a better understanding how these heroes have contributed to a better world!
