Beach Cities Sports: Basketball, golf, roller derby, volleyball and more

Golf: El Camino College will be hosting the 27th Annual Warriors Athletics Golf Classic on Friday, May 9 at Los Verdes Golf Course in Rancho Palos Verdes. The four-person scramble tournament begins at 1 p.m. and is followed by an awards dinner. The event features contest such as Hole In One, Closest to the Pin, Circle of Opportunity, Men/Women Long Drive, Putting along with prizes and raffles. Entry fee of $150 includes: Green fees, cart, mulligan package, tee package, all contests, dinner and five raffle tickets. Sponsorships are available. Proceeds benefit athletic support services, tutoring, equipment, supplies, facility improvements and staff development. Registration deadline is April 30. Volleyball: The California Beach Volleyball Association (CBVA) is hosting Men’s and Women’s Unrated tournaments on Saturday at Rosecrans in Manhattan Beach. Cost is $45 per team. The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) hosts the Spring Classic on Saturday in Hermosa Beach. Competition includes boys 18/16 and girls 16/14/12/10 divisions. ON Sunday, April 13, the Isadore B. Dockweiler Open takes place at Dockweiler State Beach with boys 18/16/14/12 and girls 18/16/14 divisions competing. Triathlon: Registration is ongoing for the 10th annual Redondo Beach Triathlon sponsored by California Health Plans. The event begins at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, June 8 at the Veteran’s Park/Pier area in Redondo Beach. All of the proceeds go to Cheer for Children, a non-profit organization that gives seasonal parties and raises money for acutely ill children at Harbor UCLA Medical Center. The USAT sanctioned scenic course event consists of a 1/2-mile swim, 6-mile bike, and 2-mile run. Space is limited to the first 600 entries. A non-competitive mini-sprint (half the distances) is also available. Awards will be given to the top three finishers in each division and the top two relay teams. Sprint fees are $75 (ages 13-19 and 65 and older), $85 (ages 20-64), $115 (relay). Mini-sprint fees are $65 and $95 for the relay. Add $5 after May 31. Basketball: Girls ages 8-14 can learn the fundamentals of basketball while improving their skill level at the ProSkills Basketball Clinic held every Sunday from 3-4:30 p.m. at the Spectrum Athletic Club, 2250 Park Place in El Segundo. The head coach is former Mira Costa and UC Fullerton standout Megan Richardson who led the Mustangs to CIF and State finals and was a four-time All-Big West player and the third highest scorer in UC Fullerton history. Roller Derby: Comprised of three home teams and two traveling all-star teams, Beach Cities Roller Derby begins its home schedule Saturday, April 12 when the Redondo Riots take on the Hermosa Hitgirls. Home games are played at Wilson Park Rink, 2400 Jefferson St. in Torrance. Joining Redondo and Hermosa as a home team is the Long Beach Banshees. All three teams primarily play intra-league games. On a larger, regional level, the Riptide Rollers compete against All-Star teams from other leagues. The Sea Vixens is a junior varsity team where up-and-coming skaters gain experience and sharpen their skills.
