A single car traffic accident in the early morning hours of Monday, March 31, resulted in a drunk driving arrest, at least one damaged parked car and minor injuries to all of the passengers in the moving vehicle, Redondo Beach Police said.

The crash occurred on 190th Street east of Prospect Ave. around midnight. Though the full report was not yet filed at the RBPD at press time, traffic investigator Bill Turner said that there were three to five passengers in the car when it spun out of control, hit a Chevy Tahoe SUV and then a wall.

At least one of the passengers was ejected from the vehicle but only minor injuries were reported.

“The driver was arrested for a DUI,” Turner said. “The entire driver’s side of the car was destroyed and the front was totaled. Luckily the passengers only sustained minor injuries, even the one who was ejected.”

According to a witness in a passing car, there was a second vehicle apparently racing with the Chevy Impala that sped away when the crash occurred.

Officer Turner could not confirm that account. According to the RBPD, there were no independent witnesses, one not involved in the accident, to support the the account of street racing.

“In order to list another car on the accident report, we have to have an independent witness say there was another car involved,” said Turner. “The passengers in the car that crashed said someone was racing after them, but no one else could confirm that.”
