Beach Cities Sports: Beach tennis, running, track and field and more

Beach Tennis: The world’s top ranked beach tennis players will be competing in the Subaru Hermosa Beach Open International Beach Tennis Championships Saturday, Oct. 27 at the Hermosa Beach Pier. Action begins at 9 a.m. and is followed by an after party at 9:30 p.m. Beach Tennis, an internationally recognized professional sport governed by the International Tennis Federation, has grown faster than any beach sport in the world over the past few years. The sport, which started in Italy over 30 years ago, is now played in over 70 countries. The popularity in newer markets (such as the United States, South America, Russia and Bulgaria) is fueling its momentum for inclusion in the 2020 Olympics.

Track and Field: Former All-American and longtime UCLA coach Anthony Curran has started a youth track and field program for kids ages 10-14. Clinics will be held at Redondo Union High School. The program is an extension of Curran’s current pole vault club “No Limit Sports.” For more information or to register, contact Curran at 310-490-0849, anthony@nolimitsports.com.

Miscellaneous: Redondo Union High School alumni are invited to the Mix on the Bricks, an all-class mixer on Friday, Oct. 12. A free RUHS Campus Alumni Walk will be among the festivities prior to the evening’s Homecoming football game with the Sea Hawks hosting West Torrance. Discount tickets for the game are available. Visit RUHSAlumni.org.

Running: Registration is ongoing for the GI Joe Fall Pier2Pier Run/Walk to be held Saturday, Nov. 19 at 7 a.m. Participants start at the Hermosa Beach Pier, go to the Manhattan Beach Pier and back. Entry fee is $25 before Oct. 14 ($35 after) and $100 will be awarded to the runner with the fastest time. Proceeds benefit the Air Force Sergeants Association, the Inglewood PTA and others. Registration is available at Village Runner, 1840 Sepulveda Blvd., Manhattan Beach or at MBBootcamp.com.

The Party Meets the Pavement at the 4th Annual Allstate Life Insurance Los Angeles 13.1 Half Marathon and 5K on Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013. The half marathon begins on the Venice Boardwalk and ends in Playa Del Rey. Live entertainment, food and refreshments including the Michelob Ultra beer garden will highlight the festivities. Runners will also be able to donate the shoes off their feet through a special partnership with Allstate and Give Your Sole, which provides worn athletic shoes for those in need. The 5K will begin 15 minutes after the start of the marathon. Entry fees are $75 (half marathon) and $25 (5K) through Oct. 18, increasing thereafter. For more information, visit 131LosAngeles.com.
