Couple robbed by group on Redondo Pier

On Sunday night, February 23, a couple was robbed at the Redondo Beach Pier in front of Barney’s Beanery. The couple, who lost cell phones, wallets and credit cards, was surrounded by a group of young people.

According to Redondo Beach Lieutenant Joe Hoffman, the suspects in question had been inside Barney’s Beanery and were asked to leave the establishment because of disruptive behavior.

An employee of the restaurant  described the group as young and Latino. He said that they were suspiciously hanging around outside the bathrooms and were asked to leave after harassing a hostess.

Once outside the restaurant, the group came upon a couple walking by the pier.

“One of the male suspects approached the man and asked for his gang affiliation,” Hoffman said. “The man denied having any. The suspects demanded his property and cell phone. The woman tried to intervene and was surrounded by the other suspects. Because they feared for their safety, they handed over their belongings.”

According to the couple, the group fled on foot southbound on George Freeth Way towards Veterans Park.

“Officers from several cities responded,” said Hoffman. “We contained the area but the suspects were not found.”

“This is what we call a strong-arm robbery,” he said. “There were no weapons seen or used but the group used fear and intimidation to rob the victims.”

Redondo Police have not yet identified any suspects in the robbery but they are reviewing surveillance footage from the pier area.

Lieutenant Hoffman asks that anyone with information about the incident contact the Redondo Beach Police Department at (310) 379-2477.
