Redondo Union dominates Bay League track and field finals

Redondo Union athletes dominated the 100th edition of the Bay League championships Friday evening as the host school captured 17 titles including four triple champions.
Dustin Herold won the 1,600 with a time of 4:27.75, had the fastest time in 800 at 1:55.37 and anchored the Sea Hawk’s winning 4×400 relay team that posted a mark of 3:20.4 with teammates Jerone Jackson, Nicolas Wells and Sergio Rodriguez.

Redondo’s Ryan Patrick captured the 100 (11.24) and 200 (22.85) titles and ran the final leg on the winning 4×100 relay team with Ryan Armalin, Jerome Bruce and Stephon Sudduth (3:21.13).
Also placing first for Redondo were Ryan Keliher in the pole vault (14-00) and Malik Downey in the triple jump (42-07).
Mira Costa had three champions with Josh Block winning the 400 (50.52), Robert McMahon taking the 110 hurdles (14.97) and P.J. Onusconich capturing the 33 hurdles with a time of 39.43.
Peninsula’s Mitchel Charles dominated the throwing events winning the shot put (55-09.75) and discus (163-10) while teammates Jacob Funes won the high jump (6-04) and Ozioma Ogele took top honors in the long jump (21-05.75).
“I’m looking forward to competing in CIF and advancing to the state meet,” said Charles, whose distance of 180-08 is the eighth-best in the state this season.

Palos Verdes distance star Casey Celestin won the 3,200 with a time of 9:21.05.
In girls competition, Redondo sprinter Kristen Hamlin won the 100 with a time of 12.34, then her mark of 14.69 edged Mira Costa’s Shante Robinson (14.70) in the 100 hurdles. Hamlin also was a member of Redondo’s winning 4×100 relay team with Kennedy Hardemion, Tairyn Montgomery and Anastasia Chiodo that posted a time of 47.98.
Amber Gore turned in another strong performance for the Sea Hawks winning the 800 with a time of 2:12.79. She has the 5th-fastest time in the state this year at 2:11.86. Gore also won the 4×400 relay with teammates Breya Wynne, Anevay Hiehle and Zuri Henderson who combined for a time of 3:54.89.
In addition to running the relay, the versatile Montgomery captured two individual titles for Redondo winning the long jump (17-00) and shot put (35-01).
Sara Curran won the pole vault for Redondo with a mark of 11-03 while teammate Ashley Wells won the discus with a toss of 116-11.
Peninsula’s Tunika Onnekikami ran a personal-best time of 24.08 to win the 200 (24.98) and then captured the 400 (56.0).
Mira Costa’s Robinson rebounded from her narrow defeat in the 100 hurdles to win the 300 hurdles with a time of 44.47 and teammates Natasha Brunstein won the 1,600 with a time of 5:06.98 and Kimi Markley captured the triple jump title with a mark of 35-09.25.
Palos Verdes swept the 3,200 event when McKennah Genovese outdistanced the field with a time of 11:07.54.
Results of the Bay League finals are available at prepcaltrack.com. The CIF prelims take place Saturday at Moorpark High School with the finals being held Saturday, May 24 at Cerritos College.
