Barfly: Celeb sightings, Fresh n’ Easy opening, Ragin’ Cajun update

Celeb Sightings: Abby Wambaugh, the USA women’s soccer captain who recently went toe to toe with the Japanese for the World Cup championship title, was spotted lunching in the sun on the patio at Sangria, Hermosa Beach this past Sunday. Also seen at Sangria last week, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban. He’s become somewhat of a regular at the Gria, coming in for dinner and drinks over the past ten years whenever he is in town…

Put the Pom Poms Down: I’ve gotten a slew of emails recently from readers wondering about the Bristol Farms on PCH,South Redondo Beach. It seems there is a new venture taking over the space and since it will have a liquor license and was home to famous live music venue The Strand (nee Annabelle’s) years ago, people started getting excited. Well, I’m sorry to report there’s no rah-rah; The space will become yet another Fresh n’ Easy Market, (yes an outpost of the same chain I reported a few weeks back will be taking over the old furniture shop on PCH, Hermosa Beach at 8th Street). Sorry friends, I was disappointed too…

Update: Another question I’ve been getting goes something like, “Deb L, I’m shaking, please, please, tell me what the hell is going on with Ragin’ Cajun?!” probably followed by some tics de Tourette because, as those of you in the know, know, the food at Ragin’ Cajun, (sad sigh for HB), could be classified as… it was damn good that’s all you need to know – what? OK, I might be a bit on edge, I haven’t gotten my fix in months cut me a little slack dammit! After owner Stephen Dominigue was forced to vacate his legendary space on Pier Ave, HB, he attempted to re-open another brick and mortar space in the El Segundo Plaza, Rosecrans/Sepulveda, but alas, the deal fell through and he has been slinging out of his food truck full time. I recently spoke with Stephen’s sister Jeannine who told me, “At this time we have decided to stick with our food truck. We are hoping some day to re-open but we are having so much fun on the food truck traveling all over LA and OC.” I’m sure they are, but boy oh po’ boy are they missed. For more info on the daily whereabouts of said food truck or to just say, “Hi Stephen please find a home soon I’m going through withdrawal your gumbo is the dish dreams are made of,” become a friend of Ragin’ Cajun Cafe on Facebook. You know how to do it, don’t even try to act like you don’t waste half your workday messing around on the Facebook…

Charity Event: The Ninth Annual Girls Night Out kicks off October’s Breast Cancer Awareness month with its “fun”-raiser to be held as usual at The Comedy & Magic Club, HB, Tuesday-Thursday, October 4-6. The event, which benefits the Cancer Support Community-Redondo Beach, (CSC-RB), formerly The Wellness Community South Bay Cities, begins each night at 5:30pm with the opening of the cash bar and silent auction, followed by dinner, live auction and a line-up of top comedians, (and who knows who might just drop by for an impromptu set, big names have done it before!), all for just $85 per person. This popular event for such a great cause sells out every year so make your reservations now at wellnessandcancer.org or call 310.376.3550 for more info. Notta Bene: Sorry fellas, this is a ladies only event. I even double checked with Theresa, one of the coordinators and she said, sure Deb L, there will be guys there, but they will be working in pink G-strings! Nice…

More Charity: Tonight, Thursday, September 29, head over to Sangria, PierPlaza, HB, (you know, where the celebs go), for a night out to benefit the Challenged Athletes Foundation. Ten percent of all proceeds and $1 of every martini ordered will benefit the foundation. Dinner served until 10pm, two bars, DJ dancing and good feelings will flow til they shut it down. For more info call 310.376.4412 or check out sangriahermosa.com and don’t worry, the foundation is not secretly helping Tony Romo, (you know I’m a Cowboys fan, I’ve really enjoyed all the snarky emails). Although he is quite challenged, he’s on his own…
