Final Veterans Pkwy workshop

The last of three Veterans Parkway workshops takes place Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Police/Fire Conference Room. It will review the final landscape master plan and gather input from the community in preparation for a presentation to City Council. Maintenance plans and policies for donor and volunteer involvement will also be discussed.

Meeting on labor & pension reform

A community discussion on labor costs and the recently implemented pension reform takes place Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers. The city’s labor attorney, Peter Brown, will present and answer questions about pension reform and the elimination of the employer-paid member’s contribution for current employees, employee compensation, health care reform and its impacts to our labor force, and more.

MB Women in Business Conference

The 2013 Manhattan Beach Women in Business Conference, themed “Starting, Supporting, Succeeding,” takes place at the Manhattan Beach Marriott on Friday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The day will provide networking opportunities, a sit-down lunch, breakout sessions and a business expo. Keynote speakers include Lindsay Rhodes, anchor and host of NFL Network and Kathy Thompson, president and COO of the LA Times. Tickets are $180, available here.

The Manhattan Beach Kiwanis Club and its sponsored youth, Mira Costa Key Club, will host its 3rd annual Toy Drive Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in front of Mira Costa’s administration building. New and gently-used children’s toys, books, games, stuffed animals and dolls are welcome. The drive will benefit L.A. County’s Toy Loan Program, a free service that lets children borrow toys as they would borrow books from a public library.

Meeting on MB underage drinking

An event titled “Protecting Our Teen’s Brain Power with Social Host Ordinance” will study and discuss the above-average rates of underage drinking in Manhattan Beach. Dr. Lisa Santora, Chief Medical Officer for the Beach Cities Health District, and Rocky Wilson, Ph.D., Mira Costa math teacher and substance abuse intervention, will speak at the meeting, which is Tuesday from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the MBUSD Educational Building.
