A black Mercedes that witnesses said was traveling north on the Esplanade in Redondo Beach at 50 to 70 miles per hour caused a six-car collision at about 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. Four of the damaged cars were parked.  The posted speed limit is 25 miles per hour.

Police confirmed this week that the driver of the Mercedes suffered an epileptic seizure, which led to him losing control of his car. The Mercedes driver has not been identified. Four people were transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

“I was engrossed in the Great Memorial Golf Tournament when I heard what sounded like three sonic booms,” said Robert Sheer, who lives on the Esplanade, just south of Avenue H, where the accident occurred. Photographs he took from his balcony show the driver of the Mercedes handcuffed to a gurney. The photos also show five cars that all appear to be totalled. A 12-pack of Coors beer is among the debris scattered down the street.

“It was a warm busy beach day, so it’s a miracle no one going to the beach was killed. My wife and two-year-old were preparing to leave our home when the accident occurred, but fortunately were delayed.” he said.
