A Torrance Superior Court judge on April 23 ordered two Hawthorne men to state prison for their armed robbery attempt at a Pier 1 Imports store in Manhattan Beach last year.

Edwin Rico Clark Davis, 26, and DeAngelo Deonta Cal, 23, were sentenced to 9 years and 6 years, respectively.

On April 22, 2012, Davis and Cal entered through the back door of the store, located on 1800 Rosecrans Ave., brandishing a gun and a knife. They held the store manager hostage while demanding money from the safe and cash registers, according to the Manhattan Beach Police Department. The five other employees in the store were able to flee the scene.

SWAT teams from MBPD and Gardena Police Department surrounded the store’s perimeter after 7 p.m., and crisis negotiators called the store to communicate with the suspects.

The store manager was released 25 minutes later with no reported injuries. The suspects remained inside the building until surrendering at 10:20 p.m., exiting the store with their arms over their heads.

Davis and Cal were subsequently arrested by MBPD and booked on kidnapping and robbery charges.

No one was injured from the incident.
