High couture certainly has gained a foothold as the area has gentrified and distinctive boutiques and designers set up shop in the South Bay.
The smell of leather laced the air of the hip Manhattan Beach bar, Twelve + Highland, renamed Twelve + Hammittland for an evening late last April. Where friends normally sip cocktails and eat crispy calamari sat hundreds of soft Hammitt purses, adorned with the signature gold and silver rivets and classic silhouettes of the 10-year-old brand.
Robin Green hopped down a line of stairs at Mira Costa in shin-high, charcoal-colored boots, a forest-green knit jacket and a feather earring dangling from her left ear.
Our 2011 swim fashions combine the clean lines of pure white swimwear from Diane’s Bikinis against the rich, vibrant colors found in two of our local yogurt shops, Froyo Yogurt on Pier Avenue and Lotus Yogurt on Hermosa Avenue.
Jeffrey Scott Men’s Collection – Readers voted Jeffrey Scott Men’s Collection as their premiere apparel and lifestyle destination of choice in the South Bay. Fashion-savvy men and the women who shop for them can expect to discover “hard-to-find, unique and contemporary collections of apparel and accessories that are on trend and are presented in an authentic shopping environment where service trumps attitude.”

Julia Jones opened Encore Bridal in Manhattan Beach nine years ago. However, the dream started long before that.
“I was sketching bridal designs when I was seven,” she said. “I’ve always loved fashion and everything ‘wedding’, to the point of obsession.”
Yet, finding the couture dress of her dreams for her own wedding proved to be an ordeal. After scouring all of Los Angeles, she took her pursuits online.
“But I didn’t feel comfortable buying on EBay or Craigslist,” she said. View photos and read about Julia Jones
When Princess Diana and Prince Charles were married in 1981, Manhattan Beach resident Lisa May threw a party.
She wore a special dress, invited over all her best girlfriends and watched the fairytale spectacle over and over again all night.
“That, to me as a young person, was a defining moment of what the whole wedding thing is all about,” May recalled.
Today, May is just as obsessive about planning perfect weddings. But she’s equally passionate about making them eco-friendly.
As our enviable Southern California winter rolls on to a close, South Bay residents may once more pack away their sweaters and coats in exchange for bikinis, board shorts and tank tops. It is time to clean out the closet and trade in last decade’s fashion trends for the new, burgeoning style of 2011. But what does this style entail exactly, and what are the major differences we should be watching for as we embark on a whole new decade of beach fashion?
For the majority of his life, volleyball player Jon Mesko was able to capitalize on his ample height. But he faced a constant struggle when trying to find men’s denim with adequate leg length. To the benefit of South Bay residents, Mesko, along with wife Tiffany, channeled this frustration into opening a denim boutique designed to ease that often arduous task of finding the perfect pair of jeans.
Soft bursts of red, lavender, and pink emerge from every vantage point, clashing with the unexpected geometric rigidity of sharp angles against a rich backdrop. These vibrant visuals are a far cry from a traditional White Christmas, but perhaps the Popavina collection of cocktail dresses by local designer Marina Rahlin better represents the holidays, California style.
Lurking quietly in the alleys of Hermosa Beach, our Dark Lady is vibrant yet subtle, sexy yet demure. Wreathed in black with bursts of red, she haunts the midnight crowd, searching for a choice way to satisfy her appetite.
