“Hulk smash!” Generations of comic book fans and millions of current moviegoers can attest to the truth of that statement. No less true is the corollary “Stan Lee rules!” referring to the pop culture titan who created the angry green icon.
Lee, still childlike and indefatigable at age 85, will swoop down upon the South Bay’s hilly southern buttress to celebrate the Fourth of July by accepting the Heritage of Freedom Award and delivering the keynote address at the Old Fashioned Palos Verdes Independence Day Celebration.
And who better to invite to America’s big birthday bash than Lee, whose wide imagination, relentless work ethic and commanding grasp of the national pulse spawned such iconic American comic-book heroes as Spider-Man, X-Men and of course the Incredible Hulk.

AAU beach volleyball comes to Hermosa
The 15th AAU Junior National Championships will be held Fri.-Sun., July 11-13 in Hermosa Beach. U20, U18, U16, U14, U12 and U10 teams compete with the girls playing Friday and Saturday, the boys on Saturday and Sunday. Tournaments are open to all boys and girls two-person teams, ages 9 to 20.
