Tennessee Williams. His plays with Pam Jenning

Wednesday, September 16 & October 7 at 7pm

In 1940 when Tennessee Williams was beginning to emerge as an exciting new playwright in New York City, the American Theater was nearing the end of an era. Eugene O’Neill, Robert E. Sherwood, Elmer Rice, Clifford Odets, Philip Barry, Maxwell Anderson, S.N. Behrman, Lillian Hellman, George S. Kaufman, and Moss Hart were among the giants on Broadway. This decade would begin the public’s fascination with Williams’ attempts to fuse the poetic with the dramatic in such memorable plays as The Glass MenagerieA Streetcar Named DesireSummer and SmokeCat on a Hot Tin RoofSweet Bird of Youth, and The Night of the Iguana. In all his plays, Tennessee Williams aimed, as he said, for “a passionate denial of sham and a cry for beauty.” He clearly left us with a vision of the chilling isolation of loneliness and the power of the human need to communicate both with others and with ourselves.

We are thrilled to welcome back the incomparable Pam Jenning. She will be sharing her knowledge and enthusiasm for the great American playwright, Tennessee Williams. Please join us for a two-part series focusing on his life and career against the backdrop of the American Theater in the twentieth century. Readings include The Glass Menagerie and 27 Wagons Full of Cotton.

The series cost, including the two books (20% discount), is $65. RSVPs required.
