Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy Presents 2017 Film Series
Exploring the World through the Lens of Animals

Join the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy for the launch of our fourth annual film series, The Beauty of Nature with a screening of Seasons on April 1st at 5:30 pm at the Warner Grand Theatre in San Pedro. This year’s The Beauty of Nature series highlights the enjoyment of nature through animals. Travel the world alongside migrating birds to Central Park, witness the beauty and brutality of Antarctica and follow the plight of the songbirds of Europe in these acclaimed and visually stunning films about animals and man’s relationship to nature.

The 2017 Beauty of Nature Film Series opens with Seasons, a film by Jacques Perrin and Jacques Cluzaud who collaborated on Winged Migration. Their latest film Seasons (2016: 97 min) begins after 80,000 years of winter. The ice has retreated, the landscape metamorphosed, the cycle of seasons is established and beasts occupy their new kingdom. This “golden age of forests” emerges with spectacular visuals of animals roaming wild. It is only later that man arrives to share this habitat. Seasons will dazzle viewers with amazing close ups of wildlife.

The Beauty of Nature in 2014, 2015 and 2016 was attended by over 2,000 patrons who enjoyed experiencing adventures and the beauty of the outdoors. Executive Director Andrea Vona describes the goal of the series as “giving people a glimpse of the important role animals play in our ecosystem, and how they benefit both nature and the people on the planet.” The films are $10 for advance purchase adults ($15 at the door) and are free for students 18 years and younger. Tickets and reservations available at www.pvplc.org and select Events and Activities. A special dinner by Neil’s Restaurant will immediately follow the April 1 screening at 7:30 pm. The cost is $40 per person and must be purchased in advance at pvplc.org/_activities or by calling 310-541-7613.
The series continues with a double-feature on May 7th 5 p.m. at the John Olguin Auditorium with Tortoise In Peril (2015; 30 min), a touching documentary about the expanding population of ravens and their impact on the desert tortoise populations; San Pedro filmmaker Tim Branning will conduct a Q&A with the audience. The May 7 screening concludes with Antarctica – A Year on Ice (2014; 92 min), a stunning journey to the most severe climate on earth. Next on July 9th, 5 pm is The Big Year (2011; 100 min), a high-flying comedy about the escapades of a trio of competitive bird watchers, to be shown at the Peninsula High School Theater. Another double-feature will be offered on September 22nd 3:30 pm to begin with Emptying the Skies (2013; 77 min) based on an essay by Jonathan Franzen about the poaching of migratory songbirds in southern Europe followed by The Sagebrush Sea (2015; 53 min) a glimpse of “the Big Empty” a 500,000 mile sea of sagebrush home to a unique wildlife community, to be shown in the Community Room of the Peninsula Center Library. Birders: The Central Park Effect (North America, 2015; 106 min) November 18th 4:30 pm will conclude the series at the Warner Grand Theatre with a documentary that transports the viewer to the dazzling, hidden world of America’s most famous city park.

The Beauty of Nature film series is generously sponsored by Leah and Dimitri Bizoumis. Music Box Films is supporting the presentation of the films. The Conservancy is grateful to the following promotional sponsors: PV/SB Audubon Society, Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, REI, Sierra Club, South Bay Film Society and Wild Birds Unlimited.
