Delectable Living highlights these classic Rolling Hills properties:

Rural Meets Renaissance

A jaw-dropping 270-degree view of ocean, city and mountains framed by eucalyptus and pepper trees sets the stage for this bucolic 10-acre oasis.

An unexpected formal garden is the star of the property. Styled after the kitchen gardens of Villandry, a Renaissance estate in France’s Loire Valley, the boxwood bordered planting beds in intricate patterns showcase floral and vegetable abundance.

Beyond this stunning centerpiece are rose gardens, sweeping lawns, meandering paths through hilly woods, greenhouse, barn, duck pond and several aviaries.

The unpretentious 2400 square-foot home has a classic East Coast salt-box exterior, but the interior is pure Western in keeping with the family’s 150 years of California ranching tradition. Built in 1940 as one of the first homes in what is now Rolling Hills, the house has retained-through four owners-its original pine plank floors and birch paneling, six-foot tall brick fireplace and beamed ceiling of massive ship’s timbers.

A 1962 addition provided a great room, utility room and brick patio, which extends the living space outdoors and embraces the natural park-like surroundings and the panoramic views.

Enchanted Terraces

Down a steep driveway, this Rolling Hills home and office/guest house-built in 1952-nestle amid abundant plantings, none of which existed when the current owners purchased the property in 1968. Now nearly 50 years of love and hard work have transformed the barren hillside into a series of lush stone-walled terraces.

A terrace of thick grass with a lap pool and French-flavored picnic area ends in a gravel path wandering down through a citrus orchardto a rocky, dry riverbed and the potting shed of any gardener’s dreams Then come flower, berry and vegetable plots, a ” plant hospital” and finally the cactus garden.

Scattered among the greenery are 17 seating areas, including a “built-to-order” ruin. Surprises include a rustic tree house and unique topiary “guest bedroom”.

Inside the cozy 2500 square-foot buildings are three well-used stone fireplaces, 12-inch wide sugar pine flooring, brick walls and split-rail beamed ceilings. The warm peach-toned color scheme is highlighted by French country furniture, plein-air paintings and numerous collections. This warm, inviting home and its picturesque grounds are clearly lived in, not merely admired from afar.
