Cancer Support Community Redondo Beach Seeks Entrants for Teen Essay Contest With Celebrity Judge Carson Daly of “The Voice”

Cancer Support Community-Redondo Beach (CSCRB) invites middle or high school students (grades 6-12) from the South Bay, Long Beach and surrounding areas who have a family member or friend who has cancer or who has lost a family member or friend to cancer to share in their own words how cancer has touched their life. Participants are invited to submit their personal reflections and original insight in “Your story! Your Voice!” Final judging and winner will be selected by celebrity judge Carson Daly of “The Voice.”

The first place winner of the contest will receive $2,500, second place will receive $1,000 and third place will receive $500. Entries will go through a multi-round judging process that will include community leaders and local media representatives with Carson Daly choosing the final winners.

The contest is being generously sponsored by a kind donor to CSCRB to promote awareness of the impact of cancer on the lives of teens and their families. Group facilitator and kids program coordinator, Sharon Feigenbaum, who is spearheading the project for CSCRB, points out that it is often difficult to see the effects cancer in a family has on an adolescent.

“Being a teen is extremely difficult and cancer adds to that difficulty,” said Feigenbaum. “Our Kids Community and Teens Connect groups at CSCRB help normalize feelings of anxiety and stress as well as provide healthy coping skills to navigate difficult feelings. This contest serves to raise awareness and is an additional outlet to give teens a voice. We are so excited that Carson Daly has agreed to lend his hand for this important cause.”

Entries will be judged on how well the essay reflects the entrant’s personal voice or story as well as clarity and quality of writing. Winners will be announced in January 2017. The submission deadline for essays is Friday, October 28, at midnight. All eligibility, essay requirements and guidelines are available at www.CancerSupportRedondoBeach.org/essay .
