Advances in Beach Water Quality Monitoring

Cabrillo Marine Aquarium (CMA) invites you to meet Dr. Stephen Weisberg, Executive Director of the Southern California Coastal Water Research Project Authority, at the Discovery Lecture Series presented by AltaSea and CMA on Friday, June 2, 2017, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Beach water quality monitoring has undergone a huge transformation in the last two decades as we have started to transition from traditional culture-based methods to genomic-based methods for quantifying bacteria. These new methods allow us to provide answers more quickly, leading to a better warning system for the public. Moreover, the genetic information captured by these new molecular methods also allows us to better define what type of animal served as the fecal source when contamination occurs.  Come learn more about this important topic on public health.

This is a FREE lecture and will be held in the John M. Olguin Auditorium. Space is limited; please call the Aquarium at 310-548-7562 to reserve your seat(s) or RSVP to: lecture@cmaqua.org. Parking is free. The Friends of CMA gift shop will be open during and after the lecture. Plan to stop by for a wide selection of gifts and books.

The Aquarium is located at 3720 Stephen M. White Drive in San Pedro and is a facility of the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks with support from Friends of Cabrillo Marine Aquarium.

CMA displays local marine life of Southern California and is open to the public on weekends from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesday through Friday from 12 noon to 5 p.m.
