The Kiwanis Club of Hermosa Beach loves to help those in need, and Sunday’s fifth annual Taste At The Beach fine wine and food extravaganza will extend a hand to the cash-strapped programs of Hermosa’s public school libraries.

Patrons will be able to shop-till-they-drop using plastic on every purchase if Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger approves a plan introduced by Jenny Oropeza (D-28th District) that will ban retailers from imposing surcharges on those who use debit cards.

The Beach Volleyball CBVA Camp will be held Mon.-Fri. from 9 a.m.-noon at the Manhattan Beach Pier. There is one coach for every eight campers who will instruct players 7-18 who want to play in competitive tournaments. Sessions run from 9 a.m.-noon with one coach for every eight players. California figs are harvested in the late summer and early fall, and I found them at every farmers market I visited in the last month. These that I found at the Torrance Farmers Market were so beautiful, I wanted to eat them fresh, so I created this salad with walnuts, mint and lemon vinaigrette, which complement their subtle sweetness and soft texture.
