Three of the reasons Redondo Union High’s surf team is undefeated this year are its three top women, (top to bottom) Diana Ann Huey, Elin Seilicki, and Vanessa Scouten. The three juniors swept their division Monday in Redondo’s 85 to 46 victory over Bishop Montgomery. Redondo’s men Kawika Ching, Jamie Meistrell, Ryan Malixi and Ian Blackmore swept the top spots in the four the shortboard heats and Redondo’s Max Briggs won the long board division. Bishop’s John Scully won the body boarding division and placed second in the long board division. Photos by Kevin Cody

Local skaters compete in upcoming 2002 US Skating Championships

Amber Corwin of Hermosa Beach, the country’s fifth ranked figure skater, and third-ranked Angela Nikodinov of San Pedro will compete Jan. 6 through the 13 in the US Figure Skating Championships at Staples Center. Among their competitors will be another South Bay skater, five time US champion Michelle Kwan of Torrance.

Reining men’s champion Timothy Goebel of Playa Del Rey will also be defending his title at the championship. Goebel is the first skater to land a quad jump in competition and is known as the "King of the Quads."

The brother and sister team of Tiffany and Johnnie Stiegler of Manhattan Beach will also compete in the championships. A top three finish will earn the Stiegler’s a spot on the US Olympic Team.

Local teacher Stephen Thompson, pictured at right, has been named by Slam Classic magazine as one of the fifty greatest dunkers in basketball history. Thompson, who coaches and teaches physical education at Coast Christian Schools in Redondo, was unaware of the honor until a student brought a copy of the magazine to school. "Unbelievable," he said. "Just to be mentioned in the same breath as Michael Jordan and Dr. J. is an honor in itself." Thompson played for Syracuse University from 1986-90, and was named an All-American in 1989. As one opposing coach said of him, "He’d go up and never come down."
