Redondo Shores Electric Car Wins First Place at Irwindale

Last Saturday the Redondo Shores High School Electric Car Club won first place at the ZEV (Zero Emission Vehicle) winter trials at Irwindale Speedway.

The vehicle, designed and built in 1995 by Shores students and staff, runs on two 12-volt batteries. The winter trials is an endurance race to determine which vehicle completes the most laps on the half-mile track. Twelve Los Angeles area high schools took part in two different classes - heated and unheated batteries. Shores competes in the unheated class due to safety concerns, explained Perry Thacker, math and science teacher. At Saturday's event, the Shores ZEV completed 73 laps with a top speed of close to 45-mph averaging 40 seconds per lap.

Students work on the ZEV during breaks, before and after school as an extracurricular activity, unlike most of the schools, which offer full programs in design, construction and maintenance. The car was built under the supervision of Van Petersen who is now retired, but is a substitute teacher. He accompanied Thacker and the students on Saturday. In last spring's competition Shores also won first place.

"The electric car is a wonderful project involving the application of both math and science skills to run successfully," Thacker said. ER

Police Beat

Girl's injury investigated

Police and child welfare officials were investigating an injury to a 6-year-old girl following her visit to Harbor General-UCLA Medical Center. Redondo officers were sent to the medical center when the girl underwent treatment for soreness and slight bleeding from the vaginal area, police said.

Medical center officials were told the girl suffered the injuries in a fall on "monkey bar" play equipment at Tulita School. "The symptoms are not necessarily consistent with that type injury so a full examination was made," a police report stated. "The investigation will continue in conjunction with Children Services." ER
