About Town: Manhattan Beach

Sister city disaster plea

Santa Rosalia, Manhattan Beach's sister city in Baja Sur, Mexico, was devastated by a fatal fire that completely destroyed two blocks of homes and displaced 40 families. Two lives were lost in the Dec. 2 blaze, which leveled 32 homes in the city's center district. The city's one fire truck was used to the maximum. The City of Santa Rosalia has set up a special bank account for fire fund donations. These can be sent to Sister City Fire Fund, P.O. Box 278, Manhattan Beach CA 90266. For more information, call 374-7623.

Fireworks at the pier

The annual holiday fireworks celebration will begin at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Manhattan Beach Pier. The Hyperion Outfall Serenaders will perform, followed by the John Brown Band's sing-along at 5:30. A toy and canned-food drive coordinated by the Torrance South Bay YMCA and the Sandpipers will be open for collections at the south upper pier parking lot. The fireworks, presented by the city and Manhattan Coolers, will be followed by a patriotic grand finale courtesy of Hal Keasler.

New chop shop HQ opening

Power Karate IKO Manhattan Beach Kyokushin Karate Headquarters will conduct a grand opening with a traditional Japanese blessing ceremony from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday at its new location, 1730 N. Sepulveda Blvd., Manhattan Beach. Mayor Walt Dougher will attend with other dignitaries from the Manhattan Beach Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club.

Police Beat

The old diversion trick

Two men in long black jackets walked into Manhattan Leather on Manhattan Avenue last week and while one diverted the attention of the sales clerk by feigning an interest in storefront merchandise, the other one stuffed $1,660 worth of purses under his coat in the middle and back of the store. The two then walked out the door without buying anything. Three of the purses were Guccis in the $300 to $400 range, according to the police report.

Vandalism? Eggs-actly. This Manhattan Beach SUV's owner will have to repaint the vehicle because of the corrosive damage caused by vandals heaving eggs. Several cars were egged in the last two weeks and two of the incidents were reported to the police. Photo by Beverly Morse.
