Need to get into the holiday spirit? El Segundo has several Christmas programs over the next few days to keep locals busy. Here are a few samplings:
The Fun Family Holiday Sing-a-Long, featuring the Dueling Pianos of Florian and Duquesne, is set for this Sunday, Dec. 16, at the Old Town Music Hall, 140 Richmond St. Shows are at 7 and 8:30 p.m. Tickets, available at the Hall or through a high school band member, are $5 for adults, $3 for ages 13-18 and free for kids 12 and under. Those who bring a canned or packaged food or hygiene item can help C.A.S.E. and also receive a free raffle ticket.
The El Segundo Recreation and Parks department, in conjunction with A Voice in the Well ensemble, presents "Christmas Tales Told by Candlelight." The program will feature "Yes Virginia, There is a Santa Claus..." (Letters between Francis Church and Virginia O'Hanlon); "A Child's Christmas in Wales" by poet Dylan Thomas; and "The Gift of the Magi" by O Henry. Dec. 15, 17, and 18 at the George E. Gordon Clubhouse, 300 E. Pine Ave. at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for kids. For more information, call 524-2700.
Local singing sensations, The Notables, will perform at A Family Christmas 2001, a special holiday program Friday, Dec. 14 in Johnson Hall at the El Segundo United Methodist Church, 540 Main St. Refreshments will be served from 7 to 7:30 p.m. with the show afterwards. Call 322-0051 for information.
On Sunday, Dec. 16, the United Methodist Church will lead other churches and choirs in presenting a Candlelight Christmas Celebration--the story of Jesus' birth through music and dance--at Library Park, 5:30 p.m. Hot beverages and snacks will be available before the show. Be sure to dress warmly.
El Segundo's Boeing Satellite Systems has created a memorial wall to honor two employees who died during the terrorist attacks of September 11. Ruben Ornelo and Chad Keller were in the fateful American Airlines plane that crashed into the Pentagon that morning. The 10 x 10 display, in the facility's cafeteria, will feature biographies, photos and plaques of the two men. Boeing plans to unveil the wall to its 8,000 employees at its quarterly meeting this week. Next year, the city of El Segundo will construct a memorial for Ornelo and Keller at one of the two new community parks. ER
