STARFIRE: Former Hermosa Beach Fire Chief Pete Bonano is trading in his Aloha shirts for something a bit more formal. Bonano was recently named Beverly Hill’s fire chief. "Do you have a tux?" the city manager asked the new chief his first day on the job. When Bonano admitted he didn’t, he was advised to get one. Among the job requirements: attendance at the Academy Awards.

SAFE SKIING: Hermosa’s snow film making legend Warren Miller has discovered skiing’s answer to surfing’s Tavarua Island — a private ski resort where the 76-year-old filmmaker and his friends can remember what it was like before snowboarders. The resort is featured in Miller’s latest film "Cold Fusion." The film screens tonight at Redondo Union High at 8 p.m.

WHEELCHAIR 22: LAX airline personnel recently refused to provide a wheelchair to a Redondo resident’s crippled mother-in-law until the mother-in-law presented herself at the ticket counter. The problem was the mother-in-law couldn’t walk to the ticket counter from the LAX parking lot, where the resident was required to park. Fortunately, the resident’s mother-in-law was light. He carried her.

CYBERSERVICE: LAX may be making it more difficult to fly, but at least the airport is making it easier to complain. Noise complaints may now be lodged online at www.lawa.org. Click on LAX, then on Noise Management. The Noise Complaint Phone Hotline is also still available. That number is (310) 64-NOISE (646-6473).
