A hot Redondo High School team went up against the equally hot South High team in perfect four-foot waves at Torrance Beach last Friday. Strong offshore winds once again provided perfect tubes to everyone delight.
The first outstanding wave of the contest belonged to Souths Garret English. It was an awesome set right, which English rode forever. The bodyboard followed with Redondos Dan Dorn making an in the tube take-off on a set wave. South Highs John Joseph Jr. came right back with his own perfect tube. He did three barrel rolls on it. Souths Tyler Alinga ripped two 360s on the next set wave and finished it with two barrel rolls.
Souths Davis Penberthy found the tube on an outside wave and finished with a hot coaster to win his shortboard heat. In the longboard, John Joseph Jr. got two great rights. He finished with some nice floaters in the shorebreak to win the long board division. Souths Kelly Moore once again rode a beautiful set wave down the line. She always surfs better against the boys and finished third, behind Souths Dereck Bomback.
In the womens division Moore led South s girls on longboards while Redondos Ellen Sellicki ripped up and down with her team of shortboarders. Sellicki was impressive going backside, making some good coasters. But Moore got the wave of the heat, riding the nose all the way through the shorebreak. All the girls made it out in the solid four-foot surf and caught some impressive rides. Moore finished first, followed by Seliki and Redondos Mary Scouten.
In the last shortboard heat Souths John Joseph Jr. went against Redondos hot up and coming Ian Blackmore. The two were tied with two great waves. Ian had two long set rights down the line and some nice coasters. Joseph saw a set on the horizon. The outside wave was starting to break when John turned and dropped in. The six-foot left tubed over his head on the way down. John grabbed his rail and pulled inside. He came out smiling off the lip. It was the wave of the day.
The final score was Torrance 83, Redondo 63.
With the surf season almost half over, Mira Costa and Palos Verdes Peninsula have earned solid As. But South and Redondo arent far behind. And Bishop Montgomery is finally earning some attention with John Scully, who rips the bodyboard heats apart and surfs strong in the longboard and shortboard heats. Its too bad he cant wear a wig and surf in the womens division. Scully won the bodyboard division in his schools meet against Peninsula last week. But Peninsula won just about everything else for a 91 to 45 victory.
Tomorrow, Redondo faces Peninsula at the Hermosa pier and on Monday Bishop meets San Pedro at Burnout. ER
