Turkey trot
The City of Torrance Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring the 22nd annual Harry Sutter Memorial Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot Fun Run. This 3-mile run begins at 8 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, Nov. 22. Race packets may picked up on Wednesday, Nov. 21 from noon to 8 p.m. at the Ken Miller Recreation Center, 3341 Torrance Blvd., or on race day, beginning at 6:30 a.m. at the race starting point in Sams parking lot in the Torrance Crossroads Shopping Center. A food drive is being held in conjunction with the run. Runners and spectators are invited to bring a can of food that will be distributed to the needy in the South Bay on Thanksgiving Day. Race entry fee is $17; late registrations after Nov. 15 will be $20. For more information call 618-2930.
Pacific Shores basketball tournament
The 50th anniversary of the Pacific Shores Basketball Tournament includes a field of play of three defending CIF Champions in Redondo Union, Crossroads and Bishop Montgomery high schools. The 16-team tournament runs from Monday, Nov. 26 through Saturday, Dec. 1 at Redondo Union High School. Game times are Monday through Friday 3 p.m., 4:30 p.m. 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The semi-finals are on Friday, Nov. 30 at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Games on Saturday, Dec. 1 start at 10:30 a.m. and continue through the day with the consolation finals at 4:30 p.m., the third place game at 6 p.m., and the championship game scheduled for 7:30 p.m. For more tournament information contact Don Turner at 798-4665.
Surf Expo
Surf Academy and the Ohana Nalu (Family Wave) surf club are hosting a surf academy at St. Cross Episcopal Church on Saturday, Dec. 1 from noon to 4 p.m. A surfboard repair clinic, surf movies, hula dancing and a Body Glove wetsuit demonstration are among the events planned. Surfers are encouraged to bring old wetsuits, body boards and surfboards for donation to inner city gremmies. St. Cross Church is located at 1818 Monterey Blvd., Hermosa Beach. Pop Warner updates
The Redondo Beach Sea Hawks Pop Warner football team, the Jr. Midget Division (10-12 year olds), defeated the Tri-City Falcons 13-0 in the Pacific Coast Conference semi-final playoffs. The Sea Hawks play the Gardena Mohicans this Saturday for the conference championship. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Paramount High School. 972-8619.
Village Runner 5K run/walk
The 5th annual Village Runner Christmas Run/Walk, Kids Little Elves Dash, and Pancake Breakfast with Santa Claus takes place on Saturday, Dec. 8 at Redondo Beach Elks Club, corner of Torrance Blvd. and Catalina (top of the Redondo Beach Pier). This is a community event for everyone in the family. Donate a toy or stop by and make a donation. Beneficiaries include the NYPD and FDNY Families Disaster Relief Funds, and Cheer for Children.
