About Town: Hermosa Beach

Lounge fund-raiser

The band Kelly’s Lot will perform Saturday, Nov. 17 at the Comedy & Magic Club’s Lounge at the Beach, and fund-raisers will auction off items including a Jack Nicholson-autographed "Rolling Stone" magazine, to support the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. The band will play 6 to 9 p.m., and tickets are $10.

All proceeds will go to the Red Cross fund, said William Hunter, chairman of the "United As One" campaign.

Food drive help

Hotel Hermosa has begun collecting canned food and making financial donations to the Salvation Army’s food drives, said Jean Hirano, who sits on the Army’s advisory board and chairs its "Meals on Wheels" program.

Increasing layoffs and unemployment, coupled with decreasing donations from hard-strapped businesses, have put a squeeze on the meals program, she said. The Magic Rainbow preschool in Manhattan Beach also has been participating in the food drive, Hirano said.

Young and jazzy

A children’s jazz class ensemble from Music Rhapsody will perform 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Lighthouse Café on Hermosa’s Pier Plaza. Music Rhapsody is located at 1603 Aviation Blvd. in Redondo Beach. ER
