About Town: El Segundo

Richmond Street to be featured on Fox Shows

You might recognize bits and pieces of Richmond Street in upcoming episodes of Fox’s The Practice and Boston Public. Over the last two weeks, the Manhattan Beach-based David E. Kelley Productions, which produces those two shows as well as Ally McBeal, filmed segments in front of and inside businesses along the 100 block of Richmond Street. Last Tuesday, crews filmed for five hours, mostly inside Occasions--a popular local banquet facility. Occasions was transformed into a fictional restaurant called Occasions Continental Cuisine, where two stars from The Practice were shown dining. Set designers added Christmas trees in the background to reflect the holiday period. The actors were also filmed walking along the street, passing a bar (the Richmond Bar and Grill) as well as faux lamp and bookshops.

In order to proceed, the producer needed ninety- percent approval of all businesses and residents within a 300-foot radius of the designated area. The city of El Segundo and all affected businesses received compensation.

Kelley Productions has filmed on Richmond Street and at El Segundo High School in past years. It has not scheduled any further shoots. "It was a very positive experience," stated Beverly Lenker, co-owner of Occasions. "We hope they will come back." ER

Police Beat

Cook fits the bills

Police arrested a cook from a local fast food restaurant Saturday on suspicion of burglary. Someone had broken into the establishment overnight and absconded with 50 one-dollar bills, plus sundry change housed within a safe on the premises. Police later found 50 one-dollar bills in the cook’s car, which the subject claimed was tip money. Waitresses indicated that they do not normally share tips with the cook. The suspect is still in custody.

Hotel rape reported

A 17-year old Hawthorne resident claimed she was raped while staying at an El Segundo hotel on October 13. She waited until last Sunday to contact police. The youngster reported that she and three others--two males and one female of the same age--checked into the hotel together. One of the males, whom she described as a "friend of a friend", allegedly attacked her while everyone was in the room. Police are interviewing the two witnesses in order to verify the story.

Cut to the wrong chase

Police suspected that a local transient with a cut on his leg might have been connected to a recent burglary at Integra Technologies on Coral Circle. Someone had broken into the company’s office the previous weekend and left a trail of blood from the front door to the bathroom. The suspect possessed a business card from Integra, but told police he had applied there for a job a month before. The story checked out and the suspect was released. Curiously, nothing was taken nor was there any evidence of tampering during the break-in. ER
