Top surf teams dominate start

The traditionally strong El Segundo, Peninsula and South Torrance surf teams started the winter competition last week with commanding victories. El Segundo’s won three of the four short board heats and the bodyboard, longboard and women’s division in their 97 to 45 victory over Bishop Montgomery at El Porto. Bishop’s Pat Campbell won his shortboard heat and placed second in longboards. El Segundo’s AJ Lester, Brandon Bowden and Edie Lester won the three other shortboard heats. John Diaz won the bodyboard heat and James Bailey and Megan Hon won the men’s and women’s longboard heats.

South’s Johnny Joseph placed first in his shortboard, bodyboard and longboard divisions in South’s 101- 45 victory over North Torrance at the Manhattan Pier. South’s Randy Hartland, Davis Penberthy and Ian Keach won the three other short board heats. South’s Kelly Moore, Ashley Stanbury and Nichole Week swept the women’s division.

Peninsula swept the top three spots in three of the four shortboard heats, and took firsts in the four other divisions in their 90 to 58 victory over San Pedro at Burnouts. San Pedro bodyboarder Jose Blanco gave his team its only division win. Peninsula’s Alex Grey, Kevin McNulty, Charlie Farrara and Jason Latimer won the four short board divisions. Peninsula’s Kenny Nakazawa won the long board division and Kira Garella won the women’s division. ER

Last weekend South Bay high school surfers swept the Third Annual Millennium Nose Riding Championships in Huntington Beach. South’s Johnny Joseph, Peninsula’s Adam Braum and San Pedro’s Steve Buchan placed first, second and third in the contest sponsored by the Long Beach Surf Club.
