Bikes donations
The sixth annual Manhattan Beach Community Churchs Christmas Bicycle Program is being conducted this year in a New York frame of mind.
The programs administrators have decided to refurbish the vehicles expressly for the needy children who were orphaned by the Sept. 11 deaths of New York Citys firefighters and policemen during the collapses of the World Trade Center buildings.
The church accepted the New York suggestion of Mohammad Seraj, owner of The Bike Shop in Hermosa Beach. He annually helps in restoring the holiday bikes. More than 500 bikes have been redone through the program. Old bikes can be dropped off at the shop at 430 Pier Ave., and donation checks can be made out to the church at 301 S. Peck Ave.
Mira Costa Homecoming
Mira Costa High Schools Homecoming ceremonies begin with a reception for the court and last years court at 6 p.m. Saturday in the schools Home Living Center (Room 113), followed by the halftime festivities during the football game and the Homecoming Dance from 8 to 11 p.m. Sunday in Fisher Gym.
Surprise encounter
A couple staying as guests in a home in the 1500 block of First Street received a scare one morning after returning from breakfast about a week before Halloween. The woman went upstairs and was startled by a bedrooms closet door opening and a young dark-skinned gentleman wearing what appeared to be long white gloves stepping out. "Who the hell are you?" she asked, according to Manhattan Beach police. The intruder said he was looking for a friend, ran down the stairs, asked the husband, "Did you see someone?" before bolting out into the neighborhood. Police fingerprinted 10 items in the home.
