Well mates, rite when ya thinks that summer is over it ain't. Yep, most folks been pulling their rigs out of the water and putting the summer toys away. I say give it just a few more weeks or even a month. Look, down Diego way the Bluefin, Albacore, Yellowtail, Dorado and now more Yellowfin Tuna are biting. If'in ya hop on a plane to La Paz, Baja Sur Mexico, you have Yellowfin and Dorado. Then up the coast to Morro Bay, the boys are having the time of their life catching all the big Albacore a body would ever want to catch. Captain Jimmy comes back from a trip from Morro sez he needs a doctor. "Why?" I ask. "Caus'in, I ain't got no cartilage that don't hurt! Them fish done pulled every muscle out of every socket in me wee body." That kind'a sums the whole of things up, don't it?
Then, out on the Colorado River, the air is cooling but the fish are heating up for that fall run. Ya have Striped Bass nipping from one of the river to the other. Up in the mountains, Trout are darn near jumping rite in yer boat or bucket on shore. On top of that, Fish and Game are filling the lakes wit now hungry farm fed speckled Trout. They'll hit just about what ever you put on a hook; which is good for the kids caus'in they don't have a mind to chunk a fly on some stick creek.
If it is Salmon you want, any plane north that lands near any decent river is filled to the brim. However, do not and I mean do not go there wit out a guide or you will get lost in red tape from the no fish department.
At the Islands man, the Yellowtail are bigger than a Volkswagen. Me buddy, Captain Gizzard of the Squid boat Thunder sez, "Don't go out there wit out no good gear 50 pound plus. Or, you'll come back wit an empty spool." AArg...
On the short banks the Rock Cod are falling into line with good counts of Red Snapper, Salmon Grouper, Starrys and Chilipeppers wit a few Lingcod. On top of the water you can still pick up a decent Mako or Soupfin Sark. In shore, Sand Bass and Halibut can be found; the trick is finding them.
Then ya have Cappy Gass of Redondo Beach wit the So Cal Gas Co. that jumps on a plane to the Channel Islands for none other than camping on a deserted beach and spends his days catching three pound surf perch! Sez, "If'in ya can't catch a plane or a boat to the islands, you can go up the coast to Oxnard and get the little one pounders."
For the hunters, that's those that use a spear or their hands to catch fish, under the water on rocks and coves they be Lobster for the picking. Me buddy, Skipper, from Al's Outboard Venice Beach, sez he ain't seen this many bugs in all his short life. Out on Rocky Point, in the kelp forest, the calm conditions and clear water has made sticking the home guard White Sea Bass fun for one and all; water temp 66 degrees...
The long and the short of it, folks, is that summer ain't just rightly over yet. That's caus'in it's Indian Summer and that means more fish! AArg, Sez the Captain...
