Beautification Meeting
The Redondo Beach Round Tables Beautification Committee will meet at 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 18 in the Council Conference Room at City Hall. Beautification Award nominations under consideration include 918 Emerald, 507 S. Broadway, and 403 N. Maria. Call Carolyn at 372-1171 ext. 2218 as to whether or not you can attend.
Chamber of Commerce Events
The Chamber of Commerce will have its "Network Café" on Oct. 18 at 11:30 a.m. at the Bluewater Grill & Seafood Restaurant, 665 Harbor Drive. The Chamber also announced that it is taking applications for Leadership Redondo Beach 2002, a program facilitating the development of future community leaders. The program will feature daylong in-depth sessions on topics including history, health, public safety, city government, technology, and economic development. The program is conducted once a month, and tuition is $675. Applications are available at the Chamber office by calling 376-6911.
"Make a Difference Day"
The City of Redondo Beach announced that Saturday, Oct. 27 is the third annual "Make a Difference Day." This years the project is to clean up Wilderness Park, 1102 Camino Real. The cleanup will occur from 10 a.m. to noon. Wear casual clothing, appropriate for cleanup. For more information, call 310-318-0650.
High (Drunk) School
At 12:21 p.m. on Oct. 8 officers were dispatched to assist the dean of students at the high school concerning an allegedly hostile drunken student. Officers determined that the student was unable to care for himself, and therefore placed him under arrest. The student then became extremely hostile and had to be restrained, police said. After being placed in a padded cell the subject banged his hands and head against the door, officers said. He was transported to the hospital for observation and treatment then released to his parents.
Suspicious Man Alert
During the afternoon of Oct. 9 a nine-year-old witnessed an man in his 40s approach another student as he exited the bathroom at Jefferson School. The man asked the youth if he wanted "gummies" and a "charzard card" (Pokeman), and said that the candies and cards were in his car. The boy refused to accompany the man to the car and walked away. Police notified school district administration.
FBI warning
On Oct. 11 the police department received a bulletin released by the FBI National Press Office. The warning read: "Certain information, while not specific as to target, gives the government reason to believe that there may be additional terrorist attacks within the United States and against U.S. interest overseas over the next several days. The FBI has again alerted all local law enforcement to be on the highest alert and we call on all people to immediately notify the FBI and local law enforcement of any unusual or suspicious activity."
A getaway forklift?
At 9:47 p.m. on Oct. 12 officers on bicycle patrol in the area of the Galleria at South Bay observed a man attempting to start a forklift in front of the EXPO. The suspect had allegedly turned on the propane gas and was using several different keys to start the engine. He was arrested.
Attempted murder
At 2:48 a.m. on Oct. 14 officers responded to an apartment building on S. Catalina Ave. on a report of a woman screaming for help. Arriving on the scene, officers found two men fighting, one who was apparently attempting to rescue a woman from her boyfriend. Investigation determined that the suspect had arrived home to discover his live-in girlfriend moving out, became angry, and attacked the woman, police said. During the course of the assault he disabled the telephones in the apartment, threw the woman to the ground and pinned her to the floor, then bit her several times in the head, face, neck and torso, police said. The man choked the woman and tried to smother her with a pillow, repeatedly telling her that he was going to kill her, police said. The woman resisted, and with the assistance of friends and officers she was rescued. The suspect was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
