BRICK BY BRICK: It didnt take Jack Kitchen long to start earning his keep as Honorary City Historian. Moments after Mayor Greg Hill conferred the honor on him at last weeks city council meeting, Kitchen recalled that many years ago city hall was located in a rickety old building on Emerald Street and the mayor at that time decided he wanted the building condemned. Officials from LA County came down to inspect the building, but couldnt find anything wrong. The very next day the police chief was sitting in his office when a brick fell on his head. County officials were asked to come back, and this time the mayor decided to take no chances. He positioned himself on the roof with two bricks. As the officials walked up the sidewalk, he shoved the bricks off the top of the building, narrowly missing the inspectors. The next day the city hall was condemned. "Thats how we got our city hall today," concluded Kitchen. "And thats why we appointed him city historian," said Hill
SLACKERS SLACKING: The slacker generation deserves its name, according to an age analysis of Manhattan 10K runners by race numbers-cruncher Russ Lesser. The number of 29 and younger males in this years race was 454, down a cardiac-alerting 46 percent from 1983s number. Women 29 and under were down 10 percent from 1983. By contrast, the number of women 45 and over in this years 10K was 341, a noteworthy 396 percent increase over the number of 45+ women in the 1983 MB 10K. The number of men 45 and over was also up, a notable 69 percent. This years 4,300 entrants were the largest number in the 24-year-old races history
LOCAL BOY: Hermosa council candidate Art Yoon grew up in the city he wants to represent, and he made everyone well aware of that at a pre-election forum last week (realated story page 8). While answering various questions from the audience, Yoon slipped in references to his education at Hermosa schools, his surf instruction in the Hermosa waves, his first kiss on the Hermosa pier, and his childhood view of the downtown area
BACK ATCHA: El Camino College professor Lance Widman emceed the forum, which focused on city council candidates and the three Hermosa ballot measures. At one point during the proceedings Widman paused to reflect that he is "always impressed with the quality of people who decide to run for public office." By the way, Widman is running for the city school board
