Armed robbery
On Monday, Sept. 3 at 11:09 p.m., two people entered the Fatburger restaurant located at 1698 S. Pacific Coast Highway, brandished a handgun and ordered the manager to open the safe, police said. The suspects then fled with thousands of dollars. Moments after police were notified, Officer Steve Zent stopped a vehicle leaving the area. The driver pulled over but then sped away southbound on Pacific Coast Highway with Zent in pursuit at speeds up to 90 mph, police said. The vehicle struck a curb causing a tire to blow on Anza Street in Torrance. Officers said they recovered the Fatburgers money inside the vehicle and began searching for the occupants, who fled on foot.
During a period of four hours the search was mounted by police officers from Redondo Beach, Torrance, Inglewood, Hawthorne and PalosVerdes Estates assisted by a Long Beach Police helicopter. Police found a man inside a garage, and Torrance officers fired two shots, police said. Redondo police did not immediately know why the shots were fired. The man jumped through a closed window and was chased to the 4500 block of Green Meadows Avenue where he was taken into custody and his gun was recovered, officers said. Police continued to search for a second man. Anyone with information about the crime was urged to call Sgt. Phil Keenan at 310-379-2477, ext. 2309.
