Age-old dedication
Cardinal Roger Michael Mahoney will dedicate St. Lawrence Martyr Church at 1900 Prospect on Sunday, Aug. 26 at the noon Mass. This dedication will be accompanied with much ritual and pageantry in accordance with Catholic tradition and an open invitation is extended to all. There will be a light reception in the Churchs Hall following the ceremony.
Earlier this year, the church had radical modifications made including the addition of a Chapel for the Blessed Sacrament, a new Baptismal Font and refurbished pews and outdoor landscaping.

Congresswoman Jane Harman will be on hand to meet the public from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23 at the Farmers Market held at the Redondo Beach Veterans Park.
Baby steps again

Fair housing facts
A walk-in fair housing clinic will be held from 3-5 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 27 in the upstairs conference room of the main Redondo Beach Library. The library is located at 303 N. On Tuesday, Aug. 14, Redondo Beach Police Chief Mel Nichols represented the South Bay Chiefs of Police when the KEEP SAFE (Keep Every Elder Protected Stop Abuse and Financial Exploitation) Coalition received the California Attorney Generals Distinguished Service Award for Elder Abuse Investigation, Team category. Attempted kidnapping
On Friday, Aug. 17 shortly after 6 p.m., a 4-year-old child in a baby stroller, accompanied by his 1-year-old brother and his parents, was grabbed by a man on the 1800 block of S. Catalina Ave., police said. Officers arrested a suspect after he allegedly grabbed at the child and was pushed away by the childs father. As the family crossed the street and entered the Redondo Beach Brewing Company restaurant, the man allegedly ran up to the boy and tried to remove him from the stroller. The boys father pushed the man out of the restaurant, police said, and the man tried to get inside an SUV that was pulling into a parking place. The man fled, then was spotted walking nearby, and was arrested, police said.
Highway robbery
A man entered the Bank of America at 1601 S. Pacific Coast Highway shortly after 5 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 16. Confronting the only teller working at the time, the man simulated having a gun, demanded money and then fled.
Pedestrian robbed
At 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 15, two people pointed a handgun at an 18-year-old Redondo Beach resident walking west on 182nd Street near Good Guys at the corner of Hawthorne Boulevard. The young man allowed the two to go through his pockets, taking his wallet and keys and pulling a gold medallion on a chain from his neck. The culprits jumped into the back of a waiting pickup truck and fled westbound on 182nd Street. ER
