Lifeguards win US Championships

The Los Angeles County Lifeguards defended their title for the 15th consecutive year in the US Lifesaving Association competition last week in Miami. Gold medal winners included longtime South Bay lifeguards John Matesich (Super Veterans Division), Joel Gitelson (Veterans Division), Bud Bohn (Veterans Division) and Shari Latta (Woman’s Masters Division

Stroke and sail challenge

Experience Hawaii in at the King Harbor Stroke and Sail Challenge Sunday, Aug. 19 beginning at 11 a.m. in the King Harbor Marina. Teams consisting of five persons compete in outrigger canoe races approximately 500 meters in length, with three canoes per heat. Lanakila Outrigger is conducting a paddling clinic prior to the race. After the race personal instruction from the King Harbor Youth Foundation is provided to try your hands at sailing. Donation of $30 per person includes a T-shirt, insurance fees, use of paddle and outrigger canoe, use of sailboat and awards. Lunch and beverage is provided along with musical entertainment and an additional prize is awarded for the team with the best costume. For more information visit www.khyc.org or www.lanakila.com.

Manhattan Volleyball Open

The seventh stop on the 2001 AVP Michelob Light Tour is at Manhattan Beach Pier beginning Friday, Aug. 24 through Sunday, Aug. 26. A total of 24 two-man teams and 24 two-woman teams compete. Scheduled to appear are Olympic Gold Medalists Karch Kiraly, Dain Blanton and Eric Fonoimoana. Women participants include Holly McPeak, Lisa Arce, Barbra Fontana and Elaine Youngs. Volleyball leagues

The Redondo Beach Recreation Department men’s and co-ed indoor volleyball leagues are starting the week of Sept. 9. Registration is going on now until September 6. 318-0610, ext. 3533.

Roller hockey club

The South Bay T.I.D.E.S. Roller Hockey Club is accepting registrations for youth and adult players. Five divisions are available for youth players ages 5-17, as are divisions for all adult skill levels. The youth league begins games on Saturday, Sept. 29.
