Pomp & Steely Dan
Pax Joseph Whitfield, son of Redondo’s Rick and Pam Whitfield, received a bachelor of music degree from the Berklee College of Music in Boston–from the hand of Donald Fagen of the influential rock group Steely Dan. Fagen and band mate Walter Becker were on hand to receive honorary doctor of music degrees.
Local health care
South Bay Family Healthcare Center (formerly South Bay Free Clinic) has expanded its services in Redondo Beach to include pediatric care. New services include immunizations, complete health, nutritional and developmental assessments and lead, vision and hearing screenings for children under 18. The new pediatric services expand the fundamental health care SBFHC provides services to community members who are uninsured and underinsured. Police Beat
Meth Lab raid
On Thursday, Aug. 9 Redondo Beach police raided a three-bedroom home on 21st Street in Hermosa Beach, shutting down what they said was a small "kitchen" methamphetamine laboratory. Redondo police say they have shut down 15 meth labs in the South Bay and Harbor area in the last year.
"Our goal is to eradicate these labs before they endanger local residents," Capt. Jeff Cameron said. "So far we have been successful in meth lab eradication because we have support behind us from the City."
Carjacker arrest
On Thursday, Aug. 9 at approximately 11:30 p.m., a Redondo Beach resident was walking to his car parked at Von’s Market on Inglewood Avenue. A suspect who pointed a knife and demanded the victim’s car keys and wallet, then drove away in the man’s Volvo, police said. The next day, Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies stopped the vehicle following a short pursuit and took a suspect into custody.
Rape suspect arrested
On Monday, Aug. 13 an 18-year-old Redondo Beach resident reported that she had been raped while staying with friends at the Ramada Limited Motel on Pacific Coast Highway. Acting upon information supplied by the victim, officers later arrested the suspect, a 31-year-old male transient staying at local motels. ER
