The Manhattan Beach Unified School District released the results of the STAR tests Tuesday, and school officials praised district students for their continuing improvement.
Superintendent Jerry Davis said the results show the district is making progress towards its goals.
"Our goal is nothing short of making Manhattan Beach the best district in the state," Davis said. "The fact that we have set high standards and continue to improve student achievement shows that we have the teaching talent, the organizational drive and the community support to reach that goal."
Last May, students in grades 2 through 11 took part in the fourth year of testing for the states STAR program. Students in grades 2 through 9 took the reading, mathematics, written expression, and spelling sections of the Stanford Achievement Test. In grades 9, 10 and 11 students did not take spelling, but instead took tests in science and social science.
For the third year, students in grades 2 through 11 also were given California Standards Tests in English-language arts and mathematics that are aligned to Californias content standards adopted by the State Board of Education. For 2001, Standards Tests in social science and science were added, as well as writing tests in grades 4 and 7.
Because the results were released on the eve of press time, the Easy Reader will run a more comprehensive report in next weeks sissue.
