South Bay local honors lost friend through annual surf contest

Surf, surfers shine in Frand Memorial Contest

by Matt Parker

Friends of avid surfer and Mira Costa senior Adam Frand were shocked three summers ago when he died suddenly of heart failure. The follow summer his close friend Charlie Niegar proposed a surf contest in Frand’s memory, with proceeds going to the Adam Frand Memorial Fund.

The Third Annual Adam Frand Surf Contest was held Saturday at Marine Street in Manhattan Beach.

"In the past years we have had about 85 entries, but this year we ran heats 15 minute heats from seven in the morning to five at night and we still had to turn people away," Niegar said.

Frand evidently pulled some strings because the usually dormant South Bay surf was awoken by a south swell, accompanied by sunny skies. The morning saw clean, head high sets and the afternoon brought thumping six-foot waves.

Stand outs of the day in the short board open division included Brain Robbis who pulled it together and hooked up with two solid in and out barrels, which were difficult to find in the challenging conditions. Christian Izzo in the bodyboard drop knee division entertained the crowd with his flashy style and explosive turns.
