South
Bay surfers Alex Gray, Holly Beck, and Scott Daley won first place in their
divisions Sunday at the National Scholastic Surfing Association Western Region
Championships. The contest was held in 10-foot surf at the Huntington pier.
All three surf for Redondo Beach-based wet suit manufacturer Body Glove. Gray
also surfs for Peninsula High School. Beck surfs for UC San Diego. And Daley
is Body Gloves marketing director.
"It took me ten minutes to paddle out in one of my heats," admitted Gray, a freshman at Peninsula. Gray won the 13-14-year-old division with a 9.5 score on an overhad, set wave.
"I got two good off the lips outside, then made it to the inside, got barreled, and then got another hit," Gray said. The win qualified Gray to compete in the NSSA Nationals at Trestles on June 26.
Beck won her division and was also the Western Region NSSAs high point scorer for the year in the womens open division. Daley won the masters shortboard division. ER
