Police Beat: Redondo Beach

Assault

A man was robbed and assaulted on the 700 block of N. Pacific Coast Highway Tuesday afternoon. A man approached his victim who was sitting on a bus bench and asked him for a cigarette, then without warning struck the victim with a short club, knocking him unconscious. The suspect took $5 from the victim’s pocket, then rode off on a bicycle. The case is under investigation.

Armed robbery

A man entered a store in the 2300 block of Artesia Boulevard Sunday night and pulled a gun from the waistband of his pants. He demanded that the clerk hand over the store’s cash. The clerk took money from the register and gave it to the robber. The man grabbed the bag and fled. The case is under investigation.

Ecstatic cops

A 32-year-old El Segundo man was arrested May 1 for the alleged possession and sale of 5,000 tabs of MDMA/Ecstasy. Following an investigation, Redondo Beach Police Special Investigations made several undercover buys of the drug in Redondo Beach and Torrance, authorities said. The man was arrested at his place of employment, and 5,000 tabs of MDMA/Ecstasy with a street value of $100,000 were recovered, police said.

Supermarket all-stars

Three suspected thieves were caught Wednesday night after trying the same trick too many times.

Two of the suspects entered an all-night grocery store, stashed a few items in their backpacks and then dashed for the door. Outside, they jumped into a waiting car and sped away. Hearing reports of the thefts broadcast over the radio, a Redondo Beach Police officer checked out a nearby supermarket in the same chain. He saw a vehicle matching the description of the suspects in the previous robbery backed into a parking space near the front door. Two men exited the store and walked up to the car, where the driver greeted them. The three were arrested, police said.

You again?

A man who was arrested in the 2200 block of Carnegie Friday night on suspicion of driving under the influence requested a blood alcohol test. At the hospital the man allegedly refused the test and threatened an officer. The officer subdued the man and took him to jail, where it was discovered that the man had a broken collarbone, probably from the altercation at the hospital, police reports said. The man was sent back to the hospital for medical treatment.

Lost hog

Two motorcycles allegedly stolen from Redondo Beach were recovered from a garage in East Los Angeles after police served a search warrant. A 2000 Harley Softail stolen from TRW and a Yamaha stolen from the pier parking structure were believed to be on their way to Texas and then across the border into Mexico, police said. At least one suspect is in custody. ER
