Tax reaches ballot
As expected, voters will get another chance this fall to decide whether they want to abolish the citys 6 percent utility users tax.
Los Angeles County officials verified that foes of the tax secured 406 signatures of registered Hermosa voters on petitions to place their measure on the Nov. 6 ballot. The measure only required 279 signatures, representing 5 percent of the residents who voted in the last gubernatorial election.
The measures backers turned in a total of 457 signatures, some of which were rejected as duplicates.
The utility users tax was preserved by a landslide vote in the most recent municipal election, but opponents of the tax believe that voters will rethink the matter in part because of the energy crisis that is expected to drive up consumer costs and therefor the tax as well.
