Police Beat: Hermosa Beach

Where there’s smoke

Firefighters put out a small blaze inside a Strand home on Friday and stumbled upon about 40 marijuana plants growing inside a closet, authorities said.

"They were in various stages of growth from about two feet tall to saplings, firefighter Mike Smotrys said.

Firefighters were sent to the home about 6:35 a.m. and found a blaze in one of the rooms, Smotrys said.

A heat lamp mounted atop an aquarium for lizards and frogs had apparently fallen off, coming to rest against a towel, which then sett a computer monitor ablaze, Smotrys said. The melting monitor dripped onto a chair, which then caught fire and ignited the main computer unit, he said.

Opening a closet door in the room, firefighters found the plants along with growing lamps and a fan, Smotrys said. The matter was referred to police. ER
