On The Waterfront

A pantheon of ‘60s rock gods was sculpted from sand by a team of artists led by Larry Safady during last weekend’s BeachStock 2001. More photos

DOG DAY AFTERNOON: Once again Willie the wired haired terrier was the subject of much discussion at the Hermosa City Council meeting on Tuesday. Willie, who belongs to Councilwoman Julie Oakes, wasn’t in trouble. He was being praised for winning a cute canine award at the weekend’s doggie parade. "The dog did absolutely nothing. He just stood there," Oakes confessed during a break in the proceedings. It’s understandable; Willie is 9 and he saunters on an arthritic left hip. "I think the dog deserves a prize for all the flak he gets from the city council," Mayor John Bowler said from the dais…

GOLDEN GOLDEN RETRIEVER: A golden retriever, described as "the ultimate family dog" received the ultimate honor Saturday night at the Peninsula Education Foundation Main Event fund-raiser. The dog was auctioned off for $5,000. Before the evening ended, nearly $200,000 was raised.

YOU GET THE TIP: A Peninsula couple bid $13,000 at the Peninsula Main Event to have a dinner for 10 served at their home by Chez Melange chef Robert Bell and partner Michael Franks. The bid included music by jazz pianist David Benoit and a "stunning" centerpiece by La Fleur.

SHILL STUNG: The Main Event was no place for shills. When dueling bidders drove the price up to $13,000 for the dinner for 10, Chez Melange’s Bell and Franks offered to prepare two dinners…

THERE HERE: Tuesday’s rolling blackouts kept traffic from rolling at its usual rate in parts of the South Bay, including PCH and Anita Street, where the PD came out to wave traffic this way and that. Parts of Redondo went dark in the daytime, and parts of Hermosa did too. A traffic signal went out around Prospect and Aviation.

Everyone seemed to cope…

ROCK TO ROCKHEAD: Redondo fireman Joe Barks has announced that his Rock (Catalina Isthmus) to Rock (Marineland) paddleboard race will be held June 17. Compasses and helmets recommended. Sailors have enough sense to stay out of the freighter lanes during dense fog. But paddlers are too worried about the Mako Mile to worry about the occasional freighter. Not ready for crossing the channel? The Hennessey Paddleboard Festival is July 28. In previous years the course started at Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro and wrapped around the Peninsula (or through the kelp beds if thought you were smarter than everyone else) to the Hermosa Pier. This year’s race is an in-and-out from the Hermosa Pier to the R-10 buoy off Rocky Point. Other local races this year are the two-mile Velzy-Stevens Pier to Pier race on Saturday, August 4, and the 32-mile Catalina Classic on August 26. More information is available at eatonsurf.com…
