Worker dies in fall

A 31-year-old man working on a house under construction in Hermosa died last Thursday after falling about 25 feet from a third story window to the street and landing on his head, police said.

The worker, Marcio Pena of Gardena, was walking down a flight of stairs inside the unfinished home at Eighth Street and Beach Drive when he plunged through a west-facing window past some scaffolding and down onto the street, Hermosa Beach Police Sgt. Tom Thompson said.

Paramedics were called to the scene at 8:49 a.m. and rushed Pena to Little Company of Mary Hospital in Torrance, where he was pronounced dead within about 10 minutes of his arrival.

It was unclear what caused Pena to fall through the window. The stairway was equipped with a banister and a covering had been placed on the window, which had not been fitted with a pane, Thompson said.

Officials of the California Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office were conducting routine investigations into the incident, Thompson said. ER
