Gathering of voices

Letter carriers food drive

Residents are urged to leave canned food next to their mailboxes today for collection by local letter carriers who are participating in the largest single-day food drive in the country. Last year over 3.5 million pounds of food were donated to food banks and other charities.

Rebuild the preserve

Habitat Restoration Days at the Madrona Marsh Preserve in Torrance is from 9 a.m.-noon today. 35 acres of upland back dune are being restored with native wild flowers. Park at the Natural History Center, 3201 Plaza Del Amo, on the north side of the street, between Maple and Madrona Avenues. 782-3989.

Volunteers needed

Happy Hats for Kids makes and distributes gaily decorated hats to hospitalized children. Experienced sewers and donations of sewing machines are urgently needed along with craft supplies(felt). Rover Rescue volunteers

Rover Rescue rescues dogs from animal shelters and places them for adoption. Volunteers are needed to help transport dogs from the shelters to mobile pet adoption centers, provide dog care & training information to prospective owners, and help design flyers. 212-5009.

Meals on wheels

Volunteer riders and drivers are needed for Torrance/Lomita route for two hours a week, noon to 1:30 p.m., to deliver the meals to housebound clients. 212-5009.

Abused children

Free Arts for Abused Children is seeking volunteers to interact with children through art therapy activities. Volunteers visit emergency shelters and out patient facilities located in the South Bay area and work on a one-to-one basis or in small groups. 212-5009.
