Coming Soon: Chipolte, a "sophisticated" taco and burrito joint next to Beluga, MBB, MB, scheduled to open the end of the month. The Torrance location is should open this weekend, and the Marina Del Rey location on the 21st. Début: The Cannes Film Festival 12 days of movies on the French Riviera. Where can I buy a ticket? Closing: Catskills on Broadway at the Wilshire Theatre completes its two-week return engagement this Sunday, May 13. If mom is a transplanted New Yorker, make it her Moms Day present and take her back to the heyday of Jewish comics in the Catskill Mountain resorts of Upstate New York: Milton Berle, Danny Kaye, Jerry Lewis, etc. No doubt she will "kvetch" about some "mensch" she wants you to meet or some "yenta" you are currently dating, so rather than get all involved in the "mshigas," go ahead and "schlep" her up to Beverly Hills for a "nosh" before the show, shell get a kick out of the "shtick" and so will you a bonus. Call Ticketmaster at 213.365.3500 for ticket info. Also Closing: If you havent yet seen it, this week-end is your last chance to catch Mamma Mia, the highly acclaimed musical playing at the Shubert Theatre until this Sunday, May 13. Call 800.447.7400 for ticket info
Happy Anniversary: Help Paradise Sushi, Pier Plaza, HB beneath the Fishack, celebrate its 15th year in biz now through May 20 with anniversary specials on Kirin draught pitchers, 60oz for $6.99 and two-for-one sake all sizes. Some call it the hidden gem of sushi bars at least you can get loaded on the cheap! Check it out
Put That Cocktail On Hold: The Paris Opera Ballet performs "La Bayadere," now through Sunday, May 13 at the Orange Country Performing Arts Center, Town Center Drive, Costa Mesa. Since seeing my fave musical, "Rent," there back in December, Ive been dying for any chance to write about this venue because you can actually reserve your cocktails for halftime and avoid the line. I didnt believe it either but when I went to the bar for a pre-show cocktail, the barman asked if I would like to reserve one for intermission yeah I would! Then you pay for it and when the first act is over, you come out to the lobby and your cocktail is set off to the side of the bar with a little sign with your name on it. Not a bad deal. I guess my message is, go see ANYTHING at the OC Performing Arts Center. 714.556.2787
Midas At It Again: Chris Pike of Sangria, Pier Plaza, HB, Las Palmas, Hollywood and Side Door, Manhattan Ave, MB, and the old 12th Street, MB, has opened a new nightclub called "Joya," Beverly Hills. For those looking for a bit of nostalgia, Joya is now occupying the old Tribeca site at 242 North Beverly Drive, 274.4440. It will primarily be a nightclub with good food to boot. With fondue as a mainstay on the menu, they are dubbing it, "an American fondue experience." This is not your Moms fondue from the 70s, they are trying out some new infused creations as well as the traditional fondue of cheese, wine, herbs and bread. Seems everything Chris Pike touches turns to gold and Joya should be no exception. Check it out
Mothers Day: I suppose you could take mom to some fancy-schmancy brunch, but, arent there some important games on? The Lakers play for sure, and of course, outside of LA, NBA and NHL playoff action continues. Bob Beverlys got the right idea hes offering a couple of glasses of FREE champagne to all moms with their breakfast at Shellback Tavern, MBB, MB, that way the rest of us dont have to miss all the playoff action. Speaking of whats gone on already, some strange outcomes in the NBA: The Heat are out in the first round, as are the Jazz after falling to Dallas. Amazingly, Maverick (how appropriate) owner Mark Cuban made it through the whole series without getting fined. It was only a five-game series though, I'm sure he'll return to form in the second round against the Spurs. Most upsetting of all, my Knicks got knocked out by Toronto in the first round for the first time in NINE years who said Ewing wasnt worth anything to the team?
