Police Beat: Manhattan Beach

Sweet Talker

A woman’s wallet and everything in it was stolen Sunday by a man who sweet-talked her, police said. The victim parked her car in a lot near Valley and 15th Street when she was approached by the suspect, who asked for change for a $5 bill. Then he said he only needed two dimes to make a phone call, because he was moving to Laughlin. The suspect told the victim her face was beautiful, and the two kept talking for 15 minutes. The victim said she knew people in Laughlin and offered to give him their phone numbers. She gave the suspect her wallet to hold while she looked through her day planner for the numbers of friends in Laughlin. At her next stop, police said, she realized her wallet was gone. The victim went to the police station and reported the incident. An hour later, she saw the suspect at Live Oak Park and asked him if he took her wallet. He said no. She asked him to come to the police station, but the suspect said he could not because he had been drinking. Police said the woman lost her social security card, her credit cards and her ATM card.

The production manager for Notorious Pictures, which was renting stage 26, reported that a VCR, two dolls, a TV stand, a shovel, a mosquito net and a bed were taken from the stage. There were no signs of forced entry, police said.
