Celeb Sighting: Shaq at the Bottle Inn, 22nd Street and The Strand, HB for dinner in the wine room. New Owner: Alex Jordan has taken over Joe’s Diner, PCH, a Redondo Beach institution founded by the late Joe Filkosky in 1969. Famous for the "John Wayne Special" a combo of eggs, sausage, home fries, corn tortillas and Spanish sauce, added to the menu after the Duke himself walked in and told the server that was exactly what he wanted. Jordan says nothing will change. We’ll see. Now Open: Banyan Café, Highland Ave, MB, sister store to the RB location on PCH.

Wednesdays: "Beef N’ Brew" night from 5 p.m. at Hennessey’s Taverns, HB/MB/RB. Purchase one of the four main beef entrées: Filet of Sirloin; New York Steak; Tri-Tip; or T-Bone Steak and Paul will give you a pint of Heineken in a souvenir glass on his tab. A good choice for hump-day…

Fridays: Check out DJ Armando’s "Nite Groove" sponsored by Re:Style and Elite Magazine at Ein Stein’s, Pier Ave, HB, every Friday night from 10 p.m. He starts the night out with Hip-Hop and then moves into House music to match the energy of the crowd — and there is energy there! Ein Stein’s is a huge venue so it never feels like you are shoulder to shoulder, a bonus. With two bars and NO COVER all night you can’t go wrong. Support our local DJs.

Reminder: This Saturday, Cinco de Mayo, get in on the "SMARTARITA" party at "The Glass House," on The Strand, MB and party for a good cause. $25 per person, tax deductible for all the margies you can handle from 8 p.m. Proceeds go to the SMART, (South Bay Mentor Assistance Resource Team), Foundation, a group raising money to help South Bay schools with their mentoring programs. Call Michael Burstein at 546-5065 for more info…

Other Cinco Options: Start the celebration early with the Redondo Beach Elks Lodge, "Margarita Madness," Friday, May 4. $10 per person includes cocktails at 6:30 p.m. followed by a Mexican dinner at 7:30 p.m. and entertainment by Los Mariachi’s de Jalisco. Call 372-8488 for more info; Manhattan Beach, sister city to Santa Rosalia in Mexico will celebrate with a fiesta at Ruth Purdon’s home, Highland Ave, MB, this Saturday, May 5. A 5 p.m. "social hour" start and a 6 p.m. Mexican dinner for a mere $15 donation. That sure is neighborly of her! Mayor Walt Dougher will be on hand to install the new sister city officers for 2001-2002. Call Marj Crutchfield, 374-4532 or Madelyn Harter, 374-6003 for more info; The Wilmington Chamber of Commerce will hold its second annual Cinco de Mayo Street Fair and Health Expo, (tequila is healthy, isn’t it?), also Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. along Avalon Boulevard between Anaheim and Opp streets. Local biz displays, entertainment, raffles, food and health related exams — I’d suggest getting your blood pressure checked before you inhale that burrito. Call 834-8586 for more info; Get in on "The Party Bus" for World Party’s next trip, also this Saturday, to San Diego for Club Rubber's "Cinco de Mayo - Fiesta" party. Call 718-PARTY for departure times, pick-up locations and cost. You don’t even have to ro-sham-bo your friends for a "DD." Then of course there is the RB Chamber of Commerce Beachstock Classic Rock Music Festival at the Seaside Lagoon, RB Marina, Saturday and Sunday, May 5 and 6, noon to 8pm, but that has nothing to do with the Mexican holiday. Food, beer, wine, spirits, arts and crafts, amusements, sand sculptures and what else? Oh yeah, live MUSIC performed by over a dozen local classic rock cover bands. Tickets are $15 per person per day. Call 376-6911 or visit www.redondochamber.org for more info…

Sports: NHL and NBA playoffs continue this weekend with the Kings trailing the Avalanche 3-1 in the series, (at press time), while the Lakers over the Trail Blazers in theirs. In NFL news, NY Jets owner Woody Johnson is considering moving his team to LA if he is unable is unable to convince City Hall to help build a West Side Stadium to bring the team back to New York from New Jersey. He wants outta Jersey because he is sick of feeling like a second-class tenant in Giants Stadium, or maybe it's just because it's New Jersey, the armpit of America. The Los Angeles Jets — they probably wouldn’t even have to change the name…
